WHEREAS, for 77 years, the National Newspaper Publishers Association, a nonprofit trade association representing more than 200 African American–owned newspapers, has promoted high-quality journalism and empowered African American members of communities across the nation; and

WHEREAS, in 1827, Freedom’s Journal was established in New York as the first newspaper dedicated to advocating and providing a voice for African Americans; the National Newspaper Publishers Association, also known as the Black Press of America, was founded in 1941 to represent the interests of such newspapers; and

WHEREAS, located in Washington, D.C., the National Newspaper Publishers Association comprises 211 newspapers in the United States and the Caribbean islands with a weekly circulation of more than 20.1 million readers; and

WHEREAS, with the support of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, print and digital editions of African American–owned newspapers have been trusted sources of information and a source of inspiration in African American communities; and

WHEREAS, the National Newspaper Publishers Association has fulfilled its mission with the leadership of board chair Dorothy Leavell, president and chief executive officer Benjamin Chavis, and NNPA Foundation board chair Amelia Ashley-Ward, as well as the hard work and dedication of countless staff members throughout the years; and

WHEREAS, on June 26 - 30, 2018, the National Newspaper Publishers Association will hold its annual summer convention in Norfolk, hosted by the New Journal and Guide, Virginia’s oldest African American newspaper, which serves Hampton Roads and has been published continuously since 1900; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the National Newspaper Publishers Association hereby be commended for its 77 years of service to African American newspapers and communities in the Commonwealth and the United States; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the National Newspaper Publishers Association as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the organization’s legacy of achievements.
