HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 615
Commending the Rappahannock Area YMCA.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, May 30, 2018

 

WHEREAS, the Rappahannock Area YMCA, a nonprofit organization that serves the residents of the Counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford and the City of Fredericksburg by promoting the importance of a healthy body, mind, and spirit, celebrates its 45th anniversary in 2018; and

WHEREAS, the Rappahannock Area YMCA was established in 1973 after Dr. Louis B. Massad presented the idea for a local YMCA at a Rotary Club meeting; the founding board members were Dr. Massad, Don Newlin, Barbara Terry, Gerald Dalton, and the Reverend Paige Young; and

WHEREAS, the Rappahannock Area YMCA was incorporated in February 1974 and received its charter from the YMCA of the USA in July 1974; in its early days, the YMCA operated out of a small office and hosted programs at locations throughout the community; and

WHEREAS, in 1982, the Rappahannock Area YMCA opened a new, state-of-the-art facility on Butler Road in Falmouth, featuring an indoor pool, locker rooms, and multipurpose rooms for aerobics, weightlifting, and other programs; and

WHEREAS, to better meet the needs of the growing community, the Rappahannock Area YMCA opened multiple expansions in the 1980s and 1990s, adding racquetball courts, fitness centers, a three-court gymnasium, and additional multipurpose rooms, locker rooms, and office space; and

WHEREAS, in 2003, after the Rappahannock Area YMCA opened its first branch facility, what is now the Ron Rosner Family YMCA in Spotsylvania, the flagship facility was renamed as the Massad Family YMCA in honor of the organization’s founder; and

WHEREAS, the Massad Family YMCA continued to expand, opening the Rowe Tennis Center, the Steve and Cheri Thurston Water Park, a youth wing and nursery, and the region’s first public therapeutic wellness pool; and

WHEREAS, the Rappahannock YMCA also opened two additional branches, the King George Family YMCA in King George County in 2008 and the Caroline Family YMCA in Ruther Glen in 2014; and

WHEREAS, in 2017, the Rappahannock Area YMCA received the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Community Impact Award for its achievements in service to local youths through educational and literacy programs, Summer Learning Loss programs, summer camps, youth athletics, teen leadership development seminars, and the YMCA Bright Beginnings program; and

WHEREAS, the Rappahannock Area YMCA promotes healthy living for all local residents through its Empower Program for stroke patients, Cancer Care Program, Blood Pressure Program, Y-Change Diabetes Program, Therapeutic Movement Class, and Special Needs Program, and it has taught thousands of community members about the importance of swimming safety; and

WHEREAS, the Rappahannock Area YMCA serves all people, regardless of ability to pay, and has fulfilled its mission through the hard work and dedication of its generous volunteers and trained staff members and with the support of local government officials, agencies, fellow nonprofit organizations, and school districts; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Rappahannock Area YMCA hereby be commended on the occasion of its 45th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Rappahannock Area YMCA as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the organization’s legacy of service to the community.
