HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 596
Celebrating the life of Marion Brooks Robinson.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, May 30, 2018

 

WHEREAS, Marion Brooks Robinson, a proud lifelong resident of Falmouth who served the Fredericksburg and Stafford County communities as a local radio broadcaster and an educator, died on March 28, 2018; and

WHEREAS, born in 1925, Marion Robinson grew up during the Great Depression and witnessed the seminal events of the 20th century, from World War II and the moon landing to the rise of modern technology; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from Mary Washington College in 1946, Marion Robinson became one of the first female talk radio hosts in the nation as a broadcaster for WTOP in Washington, D.C., where she conducted interviews with presidents’ wives and other important guests; she later hosted a women’s program on WFLS in Fredericksburg; and

WHEREAS, Marion Robinson began her teaching career at Enon School, a one-room schoolhouse in Stafford County, then joined Stafford High School in 1965 as a history teacher; she developed the first drama program in Stafford County Public Schools, which delighted audiences with high-quality theatre productions; and

WHEREAS, Marion Robinson also volunteered her time and leadership with the Stafford County Historical Society, Fredericksburg Garden Club, Mary Washington Hospital Auxiliary and Thrift Shop Auxiliary, Mary Washington College Alumni Association, and Stafford Education Foundation; and

WHEREAS, Marion Robinson enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as an active member of Falmouth Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband, Franklin, and one son, Wesley, Marion Robinson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her sons, Frank, Brian, and Herbert, and their families, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Marion Brooks Robinson, a trailblazing radio broadcaster and a passionate educator; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Marion Brooks Robinson as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for her memory.
