WHEREAS, August Wallmeyer has written a critically acclaimed book titled The Extremes of Virginia, which examines the quality of life in Southwest Virginia, Southside Virginia, and the Eastern Shore of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, August Wallmeyer’s book compares the economic, employment, educational, health care, and illegal drug use disparities between “the Extremes” and the Commonwealth as a whole; and

WHEREAS, The Extremes of Virginia also examines the hopes, aspirations, values, and expectations of the people who live and work in Southwest Virginia, Southside Virginia, and the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and

WHEREAS, former Governor Gerald L. Baliles, has called The Extremes of Virginia “required reading for legislators and governors” and “a useful contribution to our understanding that the Commonwealth is not common when nearly two thirds of its geography is rural, poor and unknown”; and

WHEREAS, The Extremes of Virginia is a call to action to renew efforts to think differently, to abandon regional stereotypes, to refuse to believe that intractable problems are insoluble, and to support new, fresh efforts to improve conditions and opportunities in “the Extremes”; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend August Wallmeyer for his extensive study of Southwest Virginia, Southside Virginia, and the Eastern Shore of Virginia in his book, The Extremes of Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to August Wallmeyer as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his service to the Commonwealth.
