WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Iota Omega Chapter in Norfolk has provided opportunities for leadership and generous outreach to the Hampton Roads community for 94 years; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded in 1908 and is the oldest Greek organization for African American women in the United States; and

WHEREAS, established as the Iota Omega Tidewater Chapter in 1922, the Iota Omega Chapter is the ninth oldest Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter in the country and originally served the Cities of Norfolk, Newport News, and Portsmouth; and

WHEREAS, after Newport News and Portsmouth received their own chapters in the 1930s, the Iota Omega Chapter focused on supporting the Norfolk community by initiating teen forums, family roundtables, and scholarship fundraisers; and

WHEREAS, during the Civil Rights movement, the Iota Omega Chapter supported the Norfolk 17 and taught classes and offered financial support and counseling to African American families during massive resistance; and

WHEREAS, the Iota Omega Chapter plans health seminars, helps adults with enrollment in continuing education classes, holds voter registration drives, and advocates for rights restoration for nonviolent offenders; and

WHEREAS, members of the Iota Omega Chapter are active members of many local civic and service organizations and serve as trusted mentors and leaders throughout the community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Iota Omega Chapter hereby be commended on its 94-year legacy of service to the Norfolk community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Iota Omega Chapter as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for the chapter’s contributions to the residents of Norfolk and the Commonwealth.
