Commending the Salem High School football team.

WHEREAS, the Salem High School football team claimed its first state title in 10 years, winning the Virginia High School League Group 4A state championship in December 2015, after an undefeated season; and

WHEREAS, in a rematch of the 2014 state championship, the Salem High School Spartans defeated the reigning champion Lake Taylor High School Titans by a score of 17–14 to finish the season with a perfect 14–0 record; and

WHEREAS, the Salem High School Spartans took an early 14–0 lead in the championship and held the Lake Taylor High School Titans’ impressive offense to only 14 points; the Spartans kicked the game-winning field goal on their first drive of double overtime; and

WHEREAS, the victory marked the seventh state title for the Salem High School football program and the third championship win in 12 seasons for Head Coach Stephen Magenbauer; the Spartans dedicated the season to the memory of Adam Ward, a former Salem High School football player who died in August 2015; and

WHEREAS, Stephen Magenbauer was named the Virginia High School League Group 4A Coach of the Year, and six Salem High School Spartans were selected for the all-state first team, including offensive lineman Braxton Wall, running back Donte Clayborne, wide receiver Viante Tucker, defensive end Shaquille Howell, linebacker Riley Fox, and defensive back Daniel Ponton; and

WHEREAS, the successful season is a testament to the hard work and determination of the student-athletes, the able leadership of the coaches and staff, and the enthusiastic support of the entire Salem High School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the Salem High School football team hereby be commended on winning the 2015 Virginia High School League Group 4A state championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Stephen Magenbauer, head coach of the Salem High School football team, as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for the team’s achievements.
