WHEREAS, Jack Tarr, who has served admirably and tirelessly as mayor of Chincoteague for 17 years, providing sound advice and leadership to the people of the historic town on the Eastern Shore, will retire on June 30, 2016; and

WHEREAS, as mayor, Jack Tarr presides over the Chincoteague Town Council; he has been a member of the Town Council for a total of 22 years and has never missed a meeting; and

WHEREAS, Jack Tarr’s tenure as mayor has been marked by many accomplishments, including major improvements to downtown Chincoteague and a new comprehensive conservation plan for the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge; and

WHEREAS, Jack Tarr has overseen improvements to the harbor in Chincoteague, and a growth in tourism; beach lovers, fishing and hunting enthusiasts, families, and those touring NASA’s Wallops Visitors Center all spend time in the Chincoteague area, which has been a popular holiday destination for decades; and

WHEREAS, Jack Tarr has worked closely with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and other agencies to address issues relating to the barrier islands of the Eastern Shore, including nearby Assateague Island; he has been involved closely with efforts to ensure that Chincoteague is protected from the full force of storms and associated beach erosion; and

WHEREAS, during Jack Tarr’s tenure as mayor, the town of Chincoteague requested that the United States Army Corps of Engineers study the southern end of Assateague Island and the feasibility of widening the inlet; additionally, a new general management plan for Assateague Island National Seashore is under review; and

WHEREAS, the strong support of his family during his two decades of public service has enabled Jack Tarr to spend countless hours working on behalf of the people of Chincoteague; in retirement, he looks forward to spending more time with his wife, children, and grandchildren and plans to remain involved in community and town affairs; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Jack Tarr hereby be commended for his dedicated work and inspiring leadership during his 17 years as mayor of Chincoteague; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jack Tarr as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect and admiration for his many years of service to the people of Chincoteague and the Commonwealth.
