2016 SESSION
16105856DWHEREAS, the Reverend Henry Blunt, a respected spiritual leader who made many contributions to the Franklin community, died on February 23, 2016; and
WHEREAS, Henry Blunt, who was affectionately known to family and friends as “Shumi,” was a native of Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana; he attended McKinley Senior High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and honorably served his country as a member of the United States Navy for 23 years; and
WHEREAS, Henry Blunt earned a bachelor’s degree from Southern University, a master’s degree from Virginia Union University School of Theology, and an honorary doctorate from the Virginia Seminary; he was ordained to preach by Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Baton Rouge; and
WHEREAS, Henry Blunt served as pastor of three churches in Virginia—Pleasant Plain Baptist Church in Drewryville, Jerusalem Baptist Church in Sparta, and First Baptist Church in Franklin—and served as an interim pastor of Cypress Baptist Church in Surry and Rising Star Baptist Church in Smithfield; and
WHEREAS, Henry Blunt was active in the Baptist General Convention of Virginia and the National Baptist Convention; and
WHEREAS, working to strengthen and enhance the community as a member of boards and organizations at the local, state, and national levels, Henry Blunt served the people of Franklin as vice mayor, as a member of the Franklin City School Board, and as an adjunct instructor for Paul D. Camp Community College; and
WHEREAS, Henry Blunt will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his devoted wife, Clarissa; children, Steven and Sonya, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Reverend Henry Blunt, a pastor and community leader in Franklin; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Reverend Henry Blunt as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for his memory.
