SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 68
Commending George M. Homewood III.

WHEREAS, George M. Homewood III, director of planning and community development for the City of Norfolk, has been named to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners for his outstanding achievements in urban planning; and

WHEREAS, George Homewood was recognized by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) in the category of community service and leadership; being honored as a member of the AICP’s College of Fellows is the profession’s highest honor; and

WHEREAS, AICP Fellows have shown excellence in professional practice, teaching and mentoring, research, public and community service, and leadership; they have made positive and long-lasting contributions to the planning profession, which works to create communities that offer better choices for where and how people live; and

WHEREAS, George Homewood has extensive experience in urban, suburban, and rural planning in the Commonwealth; he has served as director of community development for New Kent County, chief planner for York County, and assistant planner for James City County; and

WHEREAS, additionally, George Homewood has been a coauthor of many award-winning planning documents, including comprehensive plans in York County, New Kent County, and the City of Norfolk; subdivision ordinances in York County and New Kent County; and a York County zoning ordinance; and

WHEREAS, as an active member of the American Planning Association (APA), George Homewood has served as president of the Virginia chapter and vice president for policy and legislation, and he served on the chapter’s Legislative Policy Committee; and

WHEREAS, George Homewood is a coauthor of the APA’s Hazard Mitigation Policy Guide, which was adopted in 2014, and the Freight Policy Guide, which is scheduled to be adopted in 2016; he is a member of the APA’s Emerging Issues Task Force and is a certified floodplain administrator; and

WHEREAS, George Homewood, who attended The College of William and Mary, Christopher Newport College, now known as Christopher Newport University, and George Washington University, volunteers with the Boy Scouts of America and USA Swimming and serves on the swimming and diving rules committees of a national and state high school athletic association; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That George M. Homewood III, director of planning and community development for the City of Norfolk, hereby be commended for being named a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners for his outstanding achievements in urban planning; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to George M. Homewood III as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration and congratulations for his leadership and exemplary accomplishments that have helped define the places where Virginians live and work.
