2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, Colley Avenue in Norfolk was honored with the 2015 People’s Choice selection as one of the Great Places in America by the nonprofit American Planning Association; and
WHEREAS, the American Planning Association sponsors the annual Great Places program, which recognizes streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces that add value to communities and foster economic growth and employment; and
WHEREAS, Colley Avenue runs through Norfolk’s historic Ghent neighborhood; the 18-block thoroughfare forms the spine of the busy and popular area and features a mix of stately houses, apartments, townhouses, restaurants, businesses, and institutions; and
WHEREAS, with wide sidewalks and a variety of architectural styles, Colley Avenue is a favorite destination for residents of the area; pedestrians, shoppers, and those who live and work nearby all contribute to the urban vibe that surrounds the bustling street; and
WHEREAS, people come to Colley Avenue to sample its many restaurants, see a movie at the landmark NARO Expanded Cinema, and be entertained by sidewalk buskers; visitors greatly appreciate the street’s sense of community; and
WHEREAS, the American Planning Association’s annual Great Places in America program selects locations such as Colley Avenue that have a true sense of place, cultural and historical interest, community involvement, and a vision for the future; and
WHEREAS, the American Planning Association asked the public to nominate favorite places anywhere in the nation; suggestions were collected via social media outlets, and of the five finalists, Colley Avenue was the clear winner in the People’s Choice category; and
WHEREAS, as a port city that dates from the Commonwealth’s Colonial days, Norfolk is proud of its rich history, close ties to the military, and ready access to rivers, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean; signature streets like Colley Avenue attract people of all ages; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Colley Avenue in Norfolk hereby be commended for being named the People’s Choice winner as one of the Great Places in America in 2015; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Paul D. Fraim, mayor of Norfolk, as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s congratulations for Colley Avenue’s selection as one of the 2015 Great Places in America.
