2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, in 2015, E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, a global science company in Chesterfield County, celebrated the 50th anniversary of Kevlar, one of its flagship products, which has been used in a number of safety and lifesaving applications around the world; and
WHEREAS, E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont) has been an integral part of the Chesterfield County community for more than 80 years; the Spruance Plant is DuPont’s largest manufacturing site, both in terms of jobs and capital investment; and
WHEREAS, Kevlar—a lightweight, high-strength, flame-resistant fiber—was invented by DuPont scientist Stephanie Kwolek, a pioneer for women in science, in 1965; Kevlar has found uses in a wide variety of commercial products, from surfboards and tires to communications satellites and other innovative applications; and
WHEREAS, one of the best-known applications for Kevlar has been armor and protective gear, making DuPont a leader in safety products; Kevlar products have saved the lives of thousands of industrial workers, law-enforcement officers, first responders, and members of the military and prevented injuries to thousands of others; and
WHEREAS, DuPont recently invested an additional $50 million to expand development and production of Kevlar products at the Spruance Plant; new applications of Kevlar continue to evolve, with companies now offering high-performance athletic apparel made from the material; and
WHEREAS, DuPont has supported local programs, such as Rebuilding Together Richmond and science and technology programs for local youths; DuPont employees are encouraged to engage with the community through charitable and civic organizations and activities; and
WHEREAS, DuPont commemorated the 50th anniversary of the invention of Kevlar with a special celebration at the Spruance Plant and by launching the Dare Bigger campaign, which encourages individuals to submit stories about how Kevlar helped their business or changed their lives; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company hereby be commended on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the invention of Kevlar; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for the company’s contributions to science and the importance of Kevlar in a variety of industries and fields.
