2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, Darrel Dennis Martin of Newport in Giles County, a dedicated educator, respected campaign manager, and tireless servant to the Commonwealth, died on March 20, 2015; and
WHEREAS, a native of Giles County, Darrel Martin helped inspire in students a love of language and literature as an English teacher at the University of Richmond; and
WHEREAS, under Governor Gerald L. Baliles, Darrel Martin became the first strategic planner for the Commonwealth in 1985; and
WHEREAS, Darrel Martin returned to Giles County and worked in the agriculture department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; he later worked directly for the president of the university; and
WHEREAS, Darrel Martin continued to offer his expertise and sage counsel as a political campaign manager and consultant throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, working to strengthen communities around the Commonwealth, Darrel Martin helped create the Virginia Rescue Squads Assistance Fund Act, and he strove to make the world a safer place through his work on the SALT II treaty with the Pew Foundation; and
WHEREAS, Darrel Martin will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of almost 44 years, Marie; beloved daughters, Laura and Erin, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Darrel Dennis Martin; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Darrel Dennis Martin as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
