Commending Julian B. Jacobs.

WHEREAS, Julian B. Jacobs, a courageous veteran and a respected member of the Richmond community, celebrated his 91st birthday on August 24, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Julian Jacobs grew up in Richmond and attended Thomas Jefferson High School and Virginia Polytechnic Institute, then joined many of the other young men of his generation in service to his country during World War II when he was drafted into the United States Army in 1942; and

WHEREAS, Julian Jacobs trained at Fort Custer, Michigan, and was deployed to the United Kingdom, where he served in the military police in Northern Ireland; and

WHEREAS, Julian Jacobs landed in Normandy, France, on June 10, 1944, as part of the Allied invasion force and was later attached to the Third Army under General George Patton; he fought at the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and remained in Europe through VE Day; and

WHEREAS, Julian Jacobs was shipped from Europe through the Panama Canal to the Philippines after the surrender of Germany and served in Japan as part of the postwar occupying force; and

WHEREAS, Julian Jacobs returned to Richmond in 1946 and completed his education at the University of Richmond; he went into business with his father, Paul W. Jacobs, married his high school sweetheart, Bettie Joel, and proudly raised a family; and

WHEREAS, Julian Jacobs has contributed to the growth of the Commonwealth over many decades as a home builder and real estate developer and 50-year member of the West Richmond Rotary Club; and

WHEREAS, Julian Jacobs has served on numerous other nonprofit and philanthropic boards, including as president of Congregation Beth Ahabah, and he has made significant contributions toward interfaith understanding; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Julian B. Jacobs for his numerous contributions to the community on the occasion of his 91st birthday; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Julian B. Jacobs as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his service to the Commonwealth and the United States.
