SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 22 Offered January 13, 2016 Prefiled December 30, 2015 Celebrating the life of Colethia R. Holcomb. ---------- Patron-- Locke ----------

WHEREAS, Colethia R. Holcomb of Hampton, a longtime teacher and guidance counselor in Newport News, a woman of deep faith, a member of many civic organizations, a good friend to many people, and a devoted wife and mother, died on August 11, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Colethia Holcomb was born in Newport News, where she attended the public schools; she then earned a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Union University and a master’s degree from Hampton Institute, now known as Hampton University; and

WHEREAS, Colethia Holcomb became a teacher and guidance counselor in Newport News; she touched hundreds of lives during a career in public education that spanned more than three decades and included work at George Washington Carver and Ferguson high schools; and

WHEREAS, after retiring in 1991, Colethia Holcomb stayed active in the community and enjoyed time with friends and family; she belonged to the NAACP, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and Area H Women’s Ministry; and

WHEREAS, a woman of deep and abiding faith, Colethia Holcomb was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Hampton, where she found great fulfillment and sustenance; she served as a trustee, deaconess, and was an active participant in many church groups; and

WHEREAS, Colethia Holcomb will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by Frederick, her husband of 56 years; her daughter, Cheryl, and her family; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Colethia R. Holcomb of Hampton, a respected educator in Newport News who was a teacher and guidance counselor, a woman of deep faith who made valuable contributions to her community, a friend to many people, and a devoted wife and mother; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Colethia R. Holcomb as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
