Commending Anne Andrews.

WHEREAS, in 2016, Anne Andrews retired from the South County Task Force, a group of community leaders that addresses important issues in the Mount Vernon and Lee Districts of Fairfax County, after 40 years of dedicated service; and

WHEREAS, a native of New York, Anne Andrews relocated to Mount Vernon in 1960 after working for the Civil Service Commission in Washington, D.C.; she quickly became involved in the community, joining the League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area; and

WHEREAS, the South County Task Force traces its roots to 1975, when Anne Andrews was asked to form a community advisory group to enhance and coordinate services between the government and charitable, faith-based communities for those in poverty in the Route 1 Corridor, including services relating to affordable housing, homelessness, substance abuse, mental health, and hunger; and

WHEREAS, the initial group founded by Anne Andrews thrived and formed a subcommittee on housing, which eventually became one of the Route 1 Corridor’s most vibrant charities, New Hope Housing; and

WHEREAS, Anne Andrews was instrumental in the founding of the Community Healthcare Network of Fairfax County, which manages numerous health clinics for lower income residents of Fairfax County and minimizes the need for services at area emergency rooms; and

WHEREAS, the Route 1 Task Force ultimately expanded its mission and was renamed the South County Task Force; and

WHEREAS, for 40 years, Anne Andrews convened the bimonthly meetings of the South County Task Force, which has provided citizens, businesses, and service organizations with opportunities to discuss important local issues and to coordinate with Fairfax County government agencies to strengthen the community; and

WHEREAS, the South County Task Force has facilitated cooperation on addressing homelessness, affordable housing, substance abuse, domestic violence, mental health, hunger, and poverty in the area; with Anne Andrews’ leadership and assistance, the task force restored a county nutritional program and helped consolidate county services in the South County Center; and

WHEREAS, Anne Andrews, as a past chair and member of the Southeast Health Planning Task Force, was instrumental in preventing the closure and relocation of INOVA Mount Vernon Hospital from its location on Parkers Lane; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of her exceptional contributions to the community, Anne Andrews was named a Lady Fairfax for the Mount Vernon District in 1990 and honored as the Fairfax County Citizen of the Year in 2009; and

WHEREAS, in February 2016, Anne Andrews retired as the convener of the South County Task Force after 40 years of dedicated service; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Anne Andrews on the occasion of her retirement from the South County Task Force; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Anne Andrews as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for her legacy of devoted service to the residents of Fairfax County.
