16105927DWHEREAS, Bath County, a historic county nestled in the Shenandoah Valley, celebrates its 225th anniversary in 2016; and
WHEREAS, named for the English resort town of Bath, Bath County was created on December 14, 1790, from parts of the Counties of Augusta, Botetourt, and Greenbrier; and
WHEREAS, the first Bath County court was held on May 10, 1791, at the home of Margaret Lewis in what is now Warm Springs, the county seat; and
WHEREAS, historically, Bath County has been home to ministers, generals, professional athletes, and artists, as well as respected leaders in the local community; and
WHEREAS, nearly 90 percent of Bath County is forestland, more than half of which is protected as part of a state park or natural area, affording residents and visitors alike countless opportunities for outdoor recreation such as camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing; and
WHEREAS, Bath County is known for its natural mineral springs, which have given rise to luxurious resorts in Warm Springs, Hot Springs, Healing Springs, Bath Alum Springs, and Millboro Springs and attracted visitors from throughout the Commonwealth, the United States, and the world; and
WHEREAS, Bath County is home to the Omni Homestead Resort, a luxury resort and National Historic Landmark that has delighted countless guests, including 22 United States Presidents, over its 250-year history; and
WHEREAS, Bath County will commemorate its 225th anniversary with special events and celebrations throughout 2016; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Bath County on the occasion of its 225th anniversary in 2016; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Bath County as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the county’s rich history and unique contributions to the Commonwealth.
