WHEREAS, the Arlington County Civic Federation, established in April 1916 by a coalition of six local civic associations to act as the civic voice of Arlington, is the oldest countywide organization in Arlington and has grown to include over 80 member organizations; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington County Civic Federation’s primary purpose is to work toward civic improvement of Arlington County and to promote the general welfare of Arlington County in a nonpartisan manner; and
WHEREAS, during the Great Depression, the Arlington County Civic Federation laid the foundation for its legacy of facilitating cooperation to help those in need by organizing campaigns to raise funds for local residents; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington County Civic Federation has a long history of partnerships with local government to address issues in the community; it has supported a municipal water system to protect better the community from fires, has helped to develop an organized street naming system, has assisted with land use planning, and has advocated for affordable housing and environmental issues; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington County Civic Federation has worked to ensure quality transportation networks and mass transit, parkland acquisition, good schools, clean energy, broadband communications access, and integrated long term planning; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington County Civic Federation supports equal rights for all Virginians and has been vital in making Arlington a diverse and inclusive world-class community; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington County Civic Federation will host an anniversary gala on April 8, 2016, to mark the momentous milestone and to celebrate the organization’s 100 years of service; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Arlington County Civic Federation on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Arlington County Civic Federation as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the organization’s dedication to improving the quality of life in Arlington County.
