2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, James Phillip Riddel of Vienna, a distinguished law-enforcement officer who dedicated his life to serving and protecting his fellow Fairfax County residents, died on November 6, 2015; and
WHEREAS, James “Jim” Riddel served his country honorably with the United States Marine Corps, then continued his service to the Commonwealth and the community as a member of the Fairfax County Police Department; and
WHEREAS, Jim Riddel worked to keep dangerous criminals off the streets as a homicide detective for many years, and he earned many awards and decorations for his exemplary service; and
WHEREAS, James Riddel earned accolades from several organizations, including the Fairfax County Police Association and Arlington-Fairfax Elks Lodge No. 2188, and he was named Fairfax County Investigator of the Year in 1969; and
WHEREAS, James Riddel was commended for his service to the people of Northern Virginia by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce and was the two-time recipient of the A. Heath Onthank Award, which recognizes the most outstanding employee in Fairfax County government; and
WHEREAS, at the national level, James Riddel was named as one of the Ten Most Outstanding Police Officers by Parade magazine in 1971; he was also named as the Most Outstanding Police Officer of the Year in the Commonwealth in 1972; and
WHEREAS, Jim Riddel will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Nancy; children, Jamie, James, Jr., John, Jacquelin, Maureen, Jeffrey, Vickie, Linda, Stephen, and Jason, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of James Phillip Riddel, an exceptional police officer who made countless contributions to the Fairfax County community; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James Phillip Riddel as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
