Commending Jim Elder.

WHEREAS, Jim Elder, an active coach and mentor in youth sports, was honored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Cornerstones, Inc., with a prestigious 2016 Best of Reston Award in the Individual Community Leader category; and

WHEREAS, the Best of Reston awards honor individuals, organizations, and companies that have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to helping others and improving the lives of people throughout the greater Reston area; and

WHEREAS, in addition to achieving success as a senior athlete in tennis, baseball, and basketball, including his service since 2009 as vice president for men of the Northern Virginia Tennis League, Jim Elder has worked tirelessly to improve availability and accessibility of youth sports programs in Reston; and

WHEREAS, as a head coach in Greater Reston Team Tennis, Jim Elder helped lead the 14U and 18U teams to championships in 2015 and supported six teams in the fall/winter season; he has offered his leadership to Little League and Babe Ruth League baseball and the Special Olympics; and

WHEREAS, Jim Elder served as president of the Reston Youth Basketball League from 1984 to 2012 and has served as head of officiating, part-time coach, and referee, touching the lives of more than 4,000 young basketball players in his career; and

WHEREAS, Jim Elder works to support veterans and law-enforcement officers in the community through charitable events, such as the 2015 Rally for a Cause Tennis Tournament, which benefited underserved youth; and

WHEREAS, Jim Elder was a critical partner in the success of the 2015 World Police and Fire Games in Fairfax County, where he served as tennis director and was responsible for the organization of 25 events with 211 participants from around the world; and

WHEREAS, Jim Elder has helped countless youths gain confidence and lead healthy, active lives; he strives to impart an appreciation for the importance of hard work, fair play, teamwork, and sportsmanship to all of his charges; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Jim Elder for his efforts to serve and support the youth of Reston and on his well-deserved honor as a 2016 Best of Reston Award recipient in the Individual Community Leader category; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jim Elder as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his enduring commitment to making Reston a special place to live, work, and play.
