Celebrating the life of Freddie W. Nicholas, Sr.

WHEREAS, Freddie W. Nicholas, Sr., a visionary educator and school administrator, who served the Commonwealth with distinction as the first African American college president in the Virginia Community College System, died on January 28, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Freddie Nicholas earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Virginia State University and a doctorate from the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Freddie Nicholas helped prepare students for careers, higher education, and responsible citizenship as a teacher, department chair, and assistant principal at George Washington Carver Regional High School; and

WHEREAS, a champion for the importance of a good education, Freddie Nicholas held positions at Virginia State University, Northern Virginia Community College, and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College; and

WHEREAS, as the president of John Tyler Community College from 1979 to 1990, Freddie Nicholas was admired as a dedicated leader who oversaw periods of significant growth and expansion; he revitalized the John Tyler Community College Foundation; and

WHEREAS, Freddie Nicholas earned many awards and accolades for his good work over the years, and the Nicholas Student Center at John Tyler Community College is named in his honor; and

WHEREAS, Freddie Nicholas broke down barriers and boldly paved the way for other African American leaders in education; he built a legacy of excellence for future presidents of John Tyler Community College and college presidents, deans, and principals throughout the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Freddie Nicholas will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by numerous family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Freddie W. Nicholas, Sr., a deeply respected educator and school administrator; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Freddie W. Nicholas, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
