Celebrating the life of Rudolph Prosser Crowther, Sr.

WHEREAS, Rudolph Prosser Crowther, Sr., of Bruington Farm in Northumberland County, chairman of Lilian Lumber Company, Inc., a proud veteran of the United States military who contributed to his community in many ways, an outdoorsman, and a devoted husband and father, died on January 3, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Prosser Crowther, a native of Avalon, attended Randolph-Macon College before leaving to serve in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean conflict; and

WHEREAS, in 1947, Prosser Crowther started working for Lilian Lumber Company, Inc.; he returned to the company after his military service was over and worked there for more than 50 years, eventually becoming its president; and

WHEREAS, Lilian Lumber Company prospered under Prosser Crowther’s dynamic leadership; he was a skilled business person and led the company for more than 50 years as it diversified and expanded to be better positioned for the future; and

WHEREAS, giving back to the community was an integral part of Prosser Crowther’s life; he was a member of numerous boards and commissions and especially enjoyed serving on the local board of Rappahannock Community College; and

WHEREAS, Prosser Crowther was a man of many interests; he loved trees of all kinds and undisturbed forest lands, and he greatly enjoyed spending time on boats and skiffs on the Chesapeake Bay and traveling the Intracoastal Waterway to Florida; and

WHEREAS, additionally, Prosser Crowther worked to protect the land he loved and its resources; he was proud to have placed a conservation easement on property that holds special meaning to his family, and he found great satisfaction in tending to his oyster shore and crabbing; and

WHEREAS, a talented athlete, Prosser Crowther was a pitcher in the Chesapeake League; he enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending time with their many friends; and

WHEREAS, Prosser Crowther will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by Mary Lou, his wife of 64 years; children Virginia, Prosser, Jr., Elizabeth, William, and Richard, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Rudolph Prosser Crowther, Sr., of Bruington Farm in Northumberland County, a successful business person who made many valuable contributions to his community, a man of many interests, and a devoted husband and father; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Rudolph Prosser Crowther, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
