WHEREAS, in 2015, James J. Roberts, a dedicated firefighter, public servant, and community leader, was honored for his 50 years of service to the residents of Lunenburg County as a member of the Kenbridge Fire Department; and

WHEREAS, after relocating to Kenbridge in the 1960s, James “Jack” J. Roberts joined the Kenbridge Fire Department on July 13, 1965; during his 50-year career as a firefighter, he responded to countless calls, logged more than 1,500 hours of training time, and served as assistant chief; and

WHEREAS, respected for his unsurpassed institutional knowledge of firefighting, Jack Roberts still responds to calls, and his experience in all areas, including as a pump operator, is invaluable to the department; and

WHEREAS, Jack Roberts was also a charter member and former captain of the Kenbridge Emergency Squad and offered his leadership and sage guidance to the Southside Virginia Volunteer Firefighters Association, where he was a past president; and

WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service to the community, Jack Roberts ran for and was elected to the Kenbridge Town Council, where he served for many years and became chair of the finance committee; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his duties as a first responder, Jack Roberts generously volunteers with local youth organizations and worked at Kenbridge Construction Company and Kenbridge MFG & Supply; he used his construction knowledge to help the Kenbridge Fire Department design and build a new station; and

WHEREAS, Jack Roberts enjoys fellowship and worship with the community as an active member of Kenbridge Baptist Church, and he and his wife, Charlotte, are the proud parents of three sons, Jimmy, Dickie, and David; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That James J. Roberts hereby be commended on the occasion of his 50th anniversary as a member of the Kenbridge Fire Department; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to James J. Roberts as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for his many years of work to safeguard the lives and property of his fellow Lunenburg County residents as a firefighter.
