16106258DWHEREAS, Omer Mason Bunn of Abingdon, formerly of Grundy, a coal operator in Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky who served the region and the Commonwealth in several capacities; proud veteran of the United States military; person of great faith; and a devoted husband and father, died on October 28, 2015; and
WHEREAS, Omer Bunn, who was born on Beech Fork in Lavalette, West Virginia, served in the United States Army during World War II as a surgical technician with the 621st Medical Clearing Company; he took part in the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge, receiving five battle stars; and
WHEREAS, after the war, Omer Bunn became a coal operator and, in the course of 55 years in business, had operations in Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky; he also served as the first president of Miners & Merchants Bank in Grundy, now known as TruPoint Bank; and
WHEREAS, Omer Bunn served the Commonwealth with distinction as a member of the board of the Virginia Port Authority for 14 years; he was inducted into the West Virginia Coal Miners Hall of Fame in 2005; and
WHEREAS, a man of faith, Omer Bunn enjoyed fellowship and worship at Grundy Baptist Church; he was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie, and he will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his children, Edwin, James, and Brenda, and their families, and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Omer Mason Bunn of Abingdon, formerly of Grundy, a longtime coal operator, decorated veteran of the United States military, former member of the board of the Virginia Port Authority, bank president, man of faith, and devoted husband and father; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Omer Mason Bunn as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
