HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 238
Celebrating the life of Viola Lorena Litz Addison.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 10, 2016

 

WHEREAS, Viola Lorena Litz Addison of Emory, the well-loved operator of Addison’s store, who also was a gardener, homemaker, avid reader, and devoted wife and mother, died on July 8, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Viola Addison was a native of Rural Retreat; she worked in a shirt factory before moving to Washington, D.C., during World War II, where she worked for the War Department; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Viola Addison married Ben Thomas Addison and embarked on a 46-year career operating Addison’s store in Emory; she was admired and respected by all those who knew her, including customers from the surrounding area, and she was one of the first people to receive an Emory & Henry College Community Day Award; and

WHEREAS, Viola Addison, who retired in 1992, was a quiet person with a wonderful sense of humor; she liked to garden and keep house and, as an avid reader, had read thousands of novels in her lifetime; and

WHEREAS, in recent years, Viola Addison derived great pleasure from Sunday drives with her daughter and son, exploring the beauty and natural wonders found in the five-state area; and

WHEREAS, Viola Addison was affectionately known as “Granny” to her friends and family; she was predeceased by her husband, Ben, and will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her children, Linda and Ben, Jr., and their families, and many other family members, friends, and former customers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Viola Lorena Litz Addison of Emory, the well-loved and respected operator of Addison’s store, who was a friend to many, avid reader, gardener, homemaker, and devoted wife and mother; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Viola Lorena Litz Addison as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for her memory.
