WHEREAS, Mark A. Merrell, who admirably served as principal of James Madison High School for 14 years and worked for the Fairfax County Public School system for more than three decades, retired on July 31, 2015; and

WHEREAS, except for two years, Mark Merrell spent his entire 31-year career with Fairfax County Public Schools at James Madison High School; he is thankful to have worked with dedicated and talented colleagues who shared his dedication to the school and its students; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure at James Madison High School in Vienna, Mark Merrell forged strong relationships with hundreds of students and many families to whom he was sad to bid farewell; at the time of his departure, he had worked at James Madison High School for more than half his life; and

WHEREAS, throughout his time with Fairfax County Public Schools, Mark Merrell strove to do what was in the students’ bests interests, working closely with the young men and women in his charge, fellow staff members, and the community; and

WHEREAS, as principal of James Madison High School, Mark Merrell touched countless lives, and he realized early on that the school community is a special place, one that he will greatly miss in retirement; and

WHEREAS, Mark Merrell, who considered it an honor and a privilege to serve the James Madison High School community, plans to remain in Northern Virginia and hopes to work part time in the education field; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Mark A. Merrell, principal of James Madison High School in Fairfax County for 14 years, hereby be commended for his many years of outstanding service; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mark A. Merrell as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect and admiration for his tireless dedication to the young people of Fairfax County and best wishes in retirement.
