HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 22
Commending the Woman's Club of Smithfield.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 15, 2016

 

WHEREAS, the Woman’s Club of Smithfield, a volunteer organization empowering members to better serve and support the community, celebrates 90 years of service to the residents of Smithfield in 2017; and

WHEREAS, the Woman’s Club of Smithfield was established on April 19, 1927, with 62 charter members; the organization immediately set to work on its mission to strengthen and enhance the community under the leadership of its first president, Emily Simpson; and

WHEREAS, members of the Woman’s Club of Smithfield are held to the highest standards and are expected to support the organization in all activities and endeavors, as well as join one or more community service projects; and

WHEREAS, taking special interest in the youth of the community, the Woman’s Club of Smithfield has raised money to hire an additional teacher at Smithfield High School, beautified school grounds, and offers generous scholarships to local students each year; and

WHEREAS, the Woman’s Club of Smithfield is an ardent supporter of arts and cultural events in Smithfield; the club offers book reviews, schedules speakers for town events, and hosts painting exhibits; and

WHEREAS, well known in the area for events that have become Smithfield traditions, the Woman’s Club of Smithfield hosts an annual flea market and a tree lighting ceremony to begin the holiday season; and

WHEREAS, the Woman’s Club of Smithfield celebrates local culture and heritage through its Smithfield Calendar and Smithfield Cookbook; the club also actively supports Operation Smile, the Humane Society, Christian Action, the Boy Scouts of America, the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Heifer International, and Blackwater Regional Libraries; and

WHEREAS, the members of the Woman’s Club of Smithfield are leaders in the community, donating countless volunteer hours and thousands of dollars in charitable contributions to worthy causes; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Woman’s Club of Smithfield hereby be commended on the occasion of its 90th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Suzy Brett, president of the Woman’s Club of Smithfield, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the club’s legacy of service to the residents of Smithfield.
