HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 228
Commending Lonnie Blow, Jr.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 10, 2016

 

WHEREAS, after leading the Virginia State University men’s basketball team to a conference victory in 2016, Lonnie Blow, Jr., became the only men’s basketball coach in the history of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association to win championships as coach of two different member institutions; and

WHEREAS, a native of Philadelphia, Lonnie Blow grew up in Chesapeake and attended Frederick Military Academy; he graduated from Virginia Wesleyan University, where he was a standout member of the basketball team and still holds the school record for points in a single season; and

WHEREAS, Lonnie Blow began his coaching career at the high school level with the Maury High School boys’ basketball team; he later led the Granby High School boys’ basketball team to a state title; and

WHEREAS, Lonnie Blow served as an assistant coach at Hampton University, Norfolk State University, and Old Dominion University, before becoming head coach of the men’s basketball team at Saint Augustine’s University in North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, at Saint Augustine’s University, Lonnie Blow led the team to a two-year 46 - 15 record, including a 27 - 5 record and a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) conference tournament championship in 2009 - 2010; and

WHEREAS, Lonnie Blow joined Virginia State University in 2013 and led the men’s basketball team to his second CIAA conference tournament championship and 100th career win during the 2015 - 2016 season; known for good defense and discipline, Lonnie Blow’s teams consistently rank highly in field goal defense and rebounding; and

WHEREAS, as both a player and a coach, Lonnie Blow has earned countless accolades throughout the course of his basketball career, including his 2009 induction into the Virginia Wesleyan College Athletic Hall of Fame; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Lonnie Blow, Jr., hereby be commended on becoming the only coach in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association history to win championships with two different member institutions; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lonnie Blow, Jr., as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for his exceptional achievements as a coach and mentor to young men in the Commonwealth.
