Commending the City of Fairfax Independence Day Parade.

WHEREAS, for 50 years, the City of Fairfax Independence Day Parade, a beloved community tradition and one of the largest Fourth of July parades in the Commonwealth, has provided local residents and visitors with the opportunity to celebrate the nation’s heritage and show their patriotism; and

WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax Independence Day Parade was established in 1967 by the Delta Alpha Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and American Legion Post 177, which had been hosting Fourth of July fireworks displays in the area since 1951; and

WHEREAS, the first City of Fairfax Independence Day Parade was held in the evening and followed a route from American Legion Post 177 to the original Fairfax High School; the parade relocated to downtown Fairfax in 1974 and now begins at 10:00 a.m., with spectators lining up as early as 7:00 a.m. on July 3; and

WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax Independence Day Parade has grown to include more than 200 entries from the Fairfax community and beyond, including student marching bands from all over the country; the parade has also featured flyovers and a hot air balloon race; and

WHEREAS, over the years, decorated veterans, professional athletes, business leaders, and other well-known citizens and community leaders have served as grand marshal of the City of Fairfax Independence Day Parade; with the exception of one year, Warren Carmichael has consistently served as master of ceremonies for the parade; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the City of Fairfax Independence Day Parade hereby be commended on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the City of Fairfax Independence Day Celebration Committee as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for this longstanding local tradition.
