2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, Digby A. Solomon, who considered his role as president and chief executive officer of the Daily Press Media Group to be the capstone of his four-decade career in journalism, retired on March 2, 2016; and
WHEREAS, as head of the Daily Press Media Group since 2007, Digby Solomon was responsible for three highly regarded news operations in the Commonwealth: the Daily Press of Newport News, the Virginia Gazette in Williamsburg, and the Tidewater Review in West Point; and
WHEREAS, Digby Solomon’s long career in journalism includes reporting jobs with the News-Virginian in Waynesboro, the Daily Press, and the Chicago Tribune; he also worked for a television station in Charlottesville and owned a radio station; and
WHEREAS, as a foreign correspondent for United Press International, Digby Solomon covered events in the Caribbean and South America, including revolutions in El Salvador and Grenada and the Falkland Islands war; and
WHEREAS, Digby Solomon, who had also served as business editor of the Daily Press and was in charge of digital operations for the company, was proudest of being its publisher, as his work directly affected his community, neighbors, and friends; he proudly heralded the accomplishments of local heroes, whose work to better the community often is never publicized; and
WHEREAS, under Digby Solomon’s guidance, the Daily Press won numerous awards and accolades, including the Virginia Press Association’s First Amendment Award; it also fought for Virginians’ right to see public records and for transparency in government; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Digby A. Solomon, president and chief executive officer of the Daily Press Media Group, hereby be commended on the occasion of his retirement; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Digby A. Solomon as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect and admiration for his dedication to journalistic excellence and his outstanding work on behalf of the people of Newport News and the Commonwealth.
