Commending the Sully Historic Site.

WHEREAS, in 2015, the Sully Historic Site, whose buildings date to the first years of the founding of the United States, celebrated the 40th anniversary of its restoration by the Fairfax County Park Authority; and

WHEREAS, Sully Historic Site, a land grant from Lord Fairfax, was built in 1794 as a home for Richard Bland Lee, Northern Virginia’s first elected representative to the United States Congress; he and his family lived there until 1811; and

WHEREAS, the house and grounds then had nine successive owners over the years and was a multi-crop farm, dairy operation, and a gentleman’s country home; in 1959, the Fairfax County Park Authority began restoring Sully Historic Site, and the museum opened to visitors in 1975; and

WHEREAS, today, the Sully Historic Site is a house museum that reflects the history of Fairfax County; extensive research was done to help guide the careful restoration of the buildings and grounds, and the house is decorated with period furnishings; and

WHEREAS, the Sully Historic Site looks as it did when Richard Lee and his family lived there in the late 18th century; the paint colors, carpets, window treatments, and furniture are in keeping with the Federal era, and some of the objects inside were there when it was occupied by the Lee family; and

WHEREAS, the Fairfax County Park Authority held a celebration event at Sully Historic Site on September 6, 2015, which included tours that highlighted the site’s architecture, structural changes made by the various owners, and the restoration undertaken by the park authority; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Sully Historic Site hereby be commended on the occasion of its 40th anniversary in 2015; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kirk W. Kincannon, director of the Fairfax County Park Authority, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and appreciation for the authority’s admirable efforts to preserve the Sully Historic Site and illuminate the county’s storied history.
