HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 212
Commending the Reverend Dr. Corey L. Brown.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 10, 2016

 

WHEREAS, in 2016, the Reverend Dr. Corey L. Brown, pastor of Providence Baptist Church in Newport News, celebrates his 10th Pastoral Anniversary of faithfully serving the congregation and establishing vibrant new ministries; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Corey Brown was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and attended Duval County Public Schools; he earned a bachelor’s degree from Alabama A&M University, a master’s degree from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, and a doctoral degree from United Theological Seminary; and

WHEREAS, before becoming pastor of Providence Baptist Church in 2006, the Reverend Dr. Corey Brown served as minister of Christian education at First African Baptist Church in Richmond and was pastor to college students and young adults at Bethel Baptist Institutional Church in Jacksonville, Florida; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Corey Brown has started many ministries at Providence Baptist Church, including a midday Bible study class called Happy Hour, a tutoring program staffed by qualified teachers, a leadership development ministry, and ministries focused on women, men, single people, and senior citizens; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Corey Brown is committed to spreading God’s love through word and deed; he is the author of two devotionals, Emerge: Little by Little and Get Your Aim Right; he was also a guest speaker at the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus Interfaith Prayer Breakfast in 2010, was one of the New Voices at Hampton University’s Ministers’ Conference in 2015, and is highly regarded for his prophetic and relevant sermons that inspire people to take action; and

WHEREAS, many community outreach efforts have started as a result of the Reverend Dr. Corey Brown’s leadership; a Christmas in June ministry provides food, clothing, and supplies to people in need, and the Walk 4 Education scholarship ministry has raised nearly $100,000 to assist students furthering their education; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Reverend Dr. Corey L. Brown, pastor of Providence Baptist Church in Newport News, hereby be commended on the occasion of his 10th Pastoral Anniversary and for his leadership in establishing ministries that have benefited many people; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend Dr. Corey L. Brown as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect and admiration for his faithful service to his church and community.
