HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 201
Celebrating the life of Chief Petty Officer Louge Gunn, USN, Ret.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 9, 2016

 

WHEREAS, Chief Petty Officer Louge Gunn, USN, Ret., of Norfolk, a patriotic veteran and a devoted community leader who worked to support his fellow soldiers, died on February 21, 2016; and

WHEREAS, a native of Portsmouth, Louge Gunn graduated from I. C. Norcom High School, where he played drums in the marching band; desirous to be of service to his country, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1972; and

WHEREAS, during his 21-year military career, Louge Gunn served aboard the USS Independence, USS Canisteo, USS Puget Sound, USS Seattle, USS Piedmont, USS Theodore Roosevelt, and USNS Comfort, often working in the ship’s store; he also served during the first Gulf War, earning numerous awards and decorations; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from the United States Navy in 1993, Louge Gunn earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Norfolk State University and pursued a career as a counselor, mentor, and advocate for his fellow veterans with the Virginia Department of Veterans Affairs and United States Department of Veterans Affairs; and

WHEREAS, Louge Gunn retired from his professional career in 2009, but he remained an active member of American Legion Post 190 and Chapter 21 of Disabled American Veterans; he touched countless lives by helping veterans transition back to civilian life; and

WHEREAS, a man who lived his faith through his actions, Louge Gunn enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as a member of the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by one son, Cherone, Louge Gunn will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 43 years, Mona; children, Keith, Anton, Jamal, and Jason, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Chief Petty Officer Louge Gunn, USN, Ret., a patriotic Virginian who worked to honor the service and sacrifices of his fellow veterans; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Chief Petty Officer Louge Gunn, USN, Ret., as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
