HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 200
Commending the Team Ashburn Synchronized Skating program.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 9, 2016

 

WHEREAS, the Team Ashburn Synchronized Skating program achieved a national fifth-place and third-place finish at the 2016 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships, the first time the program had scored so well in the 10 years since its founding; and

WHEREAS, Team Ashburn sent two groups of talented young skaters to the national competition; the Novice line came in fifth, and the Intermediate line placed third—the first top-three national finish in the team’s history; and

WHEREAS, the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships were held from February 24 through February 27, 2016, in Kalamazoo, Michigan; the Team Ashburn Synchronized Skating program has become a competitive force in recent years, with the Intermediate line earning a 10th-place finish at the 2014 national championships; and

WHEREAS, at the 2016 synchronized skating competition, the Intermediate line from Team Ashburn performed a routine set to music from A Chorus Line; the Novice skaters’ choreographed ice-dancing program was performed to a musical medley from Star Wars and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial; and

WHEREAS, when Team Ashburn director Jenny Cherry first organized the synchronized skating program, just 12 girls participated in the team sport; today, she oversees 10 teams, 120 skaters in all, some of whom practice for as many as 14 hours a week; and

WHEREAS, the young skaters of Team Ashburn meet each week at the Ashburn Ice House in Loudoun County, training and perfecting their intricately choreographed team ice-dancing routines; ultimately, Team Ashburn aspires to add an elite junior-level unit and compete internationally; and

WHEREAS, in addition to the hard work and determination shown by the members of Team Ashburn, the strong support of their families and friends also contributed to the young athletes’ exemplary performances at the 2016 national synchronized skating championships; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Team Ashburn Synchronized Skating program hereby be commended for achieving a national fifth-place and third-place finish at the 2016 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jenny Cherry, director of the Team Ashburn Synchronized Skating program, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and admiration for the team’s outstanding performance and stellar achievements.
