Celebrating the life of Ruth Anne Elizabeth Agnor Upshaw Herring.

WHEREAS, Ruth Anne Elizabeth Agnor Upshaw Herring, a devoted educator, respected real estate professional, and generous volunteer in the Lexington and Rockbridge communities, died on February 14, 2016; and

WHEREAS, a native of Lexington, Ruth Anne Herring graduated from Lexington High School; she earned a bachelor’s degree from Madison College and a master’s degree from the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, for many years, Ruth Anne Herring worked to inspire and educate young people as a teacher, coach, guidance counselor, and administrator for several local public school systems; and

WHEREAS, Ruth Anne Herring opened Herring Real Estate in 1973 and went on to help countless local residents achieve the dream of home ownership for more than 40 years; she also opened a travel agency, Herring Travel Services, in 1976; and

WHEREAS, striving to enhance the quality of life of her fellow community members, Ruth Anne Herring served as president of the Lexington-Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce and the Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge Association of Realtors, and she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Kiwanis Club of Lexington, Preservation Virginia, and the Rockbridge Historical Society; and

WHEREAS, Ruth Anne Herring was honored for her contributions to civic life in the region as a founding member of the Rockbridge Area Republican Committee; during her 40-year tenure with the committee, she served as chair and donated countless hours of her time and personal resources to support the local Republican Party; and

WHEREAS, a woman of deep and abiding faith, Ruth Anne Herring enjoyed fellowship and worship as a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served as organist, choir director, soloist, and secretary of the administrative board; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband, George, Ruth Anne Herring will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her children, Charles, Al, and Anne, and their families, and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Ruth Anne Elizabeth Agnor Upshaw Herring; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ruth Anne Elizabeth Agnor Upshaw Herring as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for her memory.
