HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 193
Celebrating the life of Major General Lloyd B. Ramsey, USA, Ret.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 8, 2016

 

WHEREAS, Major General Lloyd B. Ramsey, USA, Ret., of Roanoke, a decorated veteran who served the nation during three wars over the course of his 34-year military career, died on February 23, 2016; and

WHEREAS, a native of Somerset, Kentucky, Lloyd Ramsey learned the value of hard work and responsibility at a young age as a child of the Great Depression; after graduating from the University of Kentucky in 1940, he joined many of the other young men of his generation in service to the country as a second lieutenant in the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, Lloyd Ramsey served during the Battle of Kasserine Pass and participated in the capture of Berchtesgaden, the location of Adolph Hitler’s mountaintop retreat, the Eagle’s Nest; and

WHEREAS, Lloyd Ramsey also served as a senior advisor during the Korean War and was the commanding general of an infantry division during the Vietnam War; throughout his military career, he earned many citations and decorations for his valorous actions, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and multiple Purple Hearts; and

WHEREAS, after Vietnam, Lloyd Ramsey served as provost marshal general in Washington, D.C., and was a member of the senior joint staff of Far East Command and United Nations Command Headquarters in Japan; he later earned a graduate degree from Harvard University and held several positions at the Pentagon; and

WHEREAS, after his well-earned retirement, Lloyd Ramsey settled in Roanoke to be closer to his family and dedicated his life to honoring the service and sacrifices of his fellow veterans; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his beloved wife, Glenda, and a daughter, Judi, Lloyd Ramsey will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his children, Lloyd Ann and Larry, and their families and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Major General Lloyd B. Ramsey, USA, Ret., a decorated war hero and respected member of the Roanoke community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Major General Lloyd B. Ramsey, USA, Ret., as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
