WHEREAS, G. Wayne Pike, an innovative leader in the field of law enforcement and a dedicated public servant, retired as a United States Marshal for the Western District of Virginia, after 39 years of work to safeguard communities within the Commonwealth and North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, a native of Wythe County, Wayne Pike began his career in public service with the United States Air Force in 1960 and received an honorable discharge in 1964; he then pursued a career in law enforcement, beginning in High Point, North Carolina, where he worked up through the ranks to become a detective from 1964 to 1972, then served as a state investigator from 1972 to 1977; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Pike moved back to Wythe County in 1977, was first elected sheriff in 1980, and served the community in that capacity until 1998; in 2002, he was nominated by President George W. Bush as a United States Marshal for the Western District of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, after Wayne Pike was elected Sheriff of Wythe County, he sought and received numerous grants to better equip the department, and he was known as a leader among Virginia sheriffs for his ability to secure grants; and

WHEREAS, Wayne Pike encouraged his deputies to foster trust and respect between the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office and members of the public and strove to maintain the highest levels of professionalism and accountability; and

WHEREAS, admired as one of the most innovative sheriffs in the Commonwealth, Wayne Pike served on the Virginia State Commission on Criminal Justice in 1980 and the Virginia State Commission to Abolish Parole in 1994, as well as numerous other peer organizations; and

WHEREAS, now a resident of Bland County, Wayne Pike’s unique knowledge of Southwest Virginia helped him to serve and protect many communities in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, after his retirement, Wayne Pike will continue to seek opportunities to assist others within the Bland County community and spend more time with his wife, Martha; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That G. Wayne Pike hereby be commended on the occasion of his retirement as a United States Marshal for his unselfish dedication and commitment to establishing the highest standards of professionalism in law enforcement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to G. Wayne Pike as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for his contributions to the citizens of the Commonwealth and best wishes on a well-earned retirement.
