Celebrating the life of Eugene Larry Helmick.

WHEREAS, Eugene Larry Helmick of Mechanicsville, a deeply respected, self-made, dedicated small business owner and consummate family man, died on January 28, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Larry Helmick was born in Richmond on August 15, 1957, and was the son of Eugene “Bud” Helmick and Marie Helmick; and

WHEREAS, a native of Hanover County, Larry Helmick learned the value of hard work, responsibility, and attention to detail at a young age; and

WHEREAS, similar to many of the nation’s founding fathers, Larry Helmick’s first job was in the agriculture industry at a farm in Mechanicsville; he obtained this job at the age of seven through the sponsorship of his father; and

WHEREAS, Larry Helmick graduated from Lee-Davis High School in 1975 and met his wife, Kelly Juliano, that same year; they wed in 1978; and

WHEREAS, Larry Helmick started out modestly as a long-distance truck driver, owning and operating his truck together with his brother, Michael, but after several years of missing his wife and daughter, he and his brother left that industry to spend more time at home; and

WHEREAS, Larry Helmick, together with his parents, brother, and sister, opened a used-car dealership in Mechanicsville in 1986, which is still in operation today and is now known as Virginia Auto Brokers, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Larry Helmick and his family also embarked on several new business ventures, including construction, real estate development, and the family’s most recent small business, Nationwide Golf Cart, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Larry Helmick took great pride in these small businesses and worked diligently to ensure they maintained an outstanding reputation; and

WHEREAS, Larry Helmick was devoted to helping those who were less fortunate; his compassion was evident in his charity work on behalf of children with special needs and senior citizens; he was passionate about helping community service organizations, and faithfully supported Hanover County’s fire, police, and rescue departments; and

WHEREAS, a man of faith, Larry Helmick was a proud member of Pole Green Church of Christ; prior to joining Pole Green Church of Christ, he was baptized when he was a teenager at First Church of the Nazarene; and

WHEREAS, Larry Helmick, who was predeceased by his father, is survived by Kelly, his wife of 37 years; their only child, Kristie Helmick Proctor (Aaron), granddaughter Savannah Grace; mother, Marie; brother, Michael (Diana); sister, Diane Rice (Chris); and several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and

WHEREAS, Larry Helmick will be greatly missed and fondly remembered as a community leader, devoted Christian, and beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Eugene Larry Helmick of Mechanicsville, who left an incredible legacy of service to his family and community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Eugene Larry Helmick as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
