2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Lebanon High School Real World Design Challenge team won the Virginia Real World Design Challenge and will represent the Commonwealth at the 2016 national finals of the challenge; and
WHEREAS, the Real World Design Challenge is an annual competition that presents engineering challenges with real world applications to high school students; participants learn about and use professional engineering software to design a solution, then demonstrate the viability of their work; and
WHEREAS, the 2016 Real World Design Challenge tasked students with the development of an unmanned aerial vehicle to assess moisture levels of food crops; the Lebanon High School team focused on corn for the state competition; and
WHEREAS, the Lebanon High School team contacted local farmers, researched the crop, and worked as a team to design a payload and a comprehensive flight plan for an unmanned aerial vehicle; the project helped the students hone problem-solving skills and gain valuable experience in the engineering field; and
WHEREAS, as the state champions, the Lebanon High School team will travel to Washington, D.C., in April 2016 to represent the Commonwealth at the national Real World Design Challenge finals; teams in the national challenge must study two crops, and the Lebanon High School team will work with corn and strawberries; and
WHEREAS, each member of the Lebanon High School team—Matt Looney, Ben Garrett, Azrael Collins, Morgan Chumbley, Austin Blackson, and Alex Amos—contributed to the victory in different ways, with each filling a unique role on the team; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Lebanon High School Real World Design Challenge team hereby be commended on winning the Virginia Real World Design Challenge and advancing to the national competition; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jani Purtee, team mentor of the Lebanon High School Real World Design Challenge team, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the team’s achievements and best wishes for the future.
