Commemorating the 240th anniversary of the Queen Anne's Minutemen march.

WHEREAS, on February 3, 1776, members of the Queen Anne’s Minutemen departed from Hansen’s Tavern in Chester Mill, now Centreville, Maryland, by order of the Council of Safety in Annapolis to intercept British forces maneuvering up the Chesapeake Bay from Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the Queen Anne’s Minutemen marched 180 miles in snowy conditions over a dirt and gravel road to reach Northampton County Court House, a primary target of Lord Dunmore, the last British Governor of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, many of the Queen Anne’s Minutemen were poor farmers or tradesmen and did not even possess suitable shoes for the march; upon reaching a planned camp site at Snow Hill, the members of the march discovered that promised camp supplies and provisions had not arrived; and

WHEREAS, Captain James Kent, the commander of the Queen Anne’s Minutemen, was forced to use his personal funds to purchase much needed supplies and equipment, including shoes; and

WHEREAS, stories and legends of the courageous struggle of the Queen Anne’s Minutemen have passed down through history as an example of the important role played by citizen soldiers and militia in the birth of the nation; and

WHEREAS, to honor the legacy of the Queen Anne’s Minutemen march, a group of marchers reenacted the march; on February 3, 2016, the group departed from the former site of Hansen’s Tavern and set off down present-day Route 50 toward Northampton County Court House in Eastville; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the 240th anniversary of the Queen Anne’s Minutemen march hereby be commemorated; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mary Margaret Revell Goodwin, county historian of Queen Anne’s County, Maryland, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ appreciation for the historical importance of the march.
