HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 152
Celebrating the life of Joseph John DellaVecchio, Jr.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 26, 2016

 

WHEREAS, Joseph John DellaVecchio, Jr., of Virginia Beach, a proud veteran of the United States military, a career law-enforcement officer, a man of faith, and a devoted father and husband, died on October 21, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Joseph John “J.J.” DellaVecchio’s law-enforcement career began when he was a young man; he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1972, proudly serving his country as a law-enforcement specialist; and

WHEREAS, after his active duty military service ended, J.J. DellaVecchio became a security supervisor for the Hampton Roads Drug Rehabilitation Center, and then joined the City of Hampton Police Division, where he served the people of the Tidewater city from 1976 to 1979; and

WHEREAS, J.J. DellaVecchio joined the Virginia State Police in 1979, and after graduating from the state police academy was assigned to Area 5, the Fredericksburg region; he was later transferred to the Norfolk and Virginia Beach area, and in 1988, he was promoted to senior trooper; and

WHEREAS, during his career with the Virginia State Police, J.J. DellaVecchio served in many areas; he was a member of the department’s scuba team, worked in crime prevention, and served as a drug recognition technician, field training officer, general instructor, radar instructor, and driving instructor; and

WHEREAS, helping people was what J.J. DellaVecchio loved best and he received several commendations and awards for his outstanding service, including the Superintendent’s Award of Merit from the Virginia State Police and the Good Cop Award from WTKR TV Channel 3, and he was named a Top Cop in the Tidewater Area by Rock Church International; and

WHEREAS, after J.J. DellaVecchio retired from the Virginia State Police, he continued serving his community by working for the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office for 11 years as a lead background investigator in human resources; and

WHEREAS, J.J. DellaVecchio was an active member of the Virginia Beach Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #8; he was the association’s secretary for several years and helped organize the association’s annual holiday Shop with a Cop event; and

WHEREAS, J.J. DellaVecchio was a man of faith who was known for his generous and selfless nature; he participated in several mission trips with Glad Tidings Church, including outreach efforts to Belgium and Mexico; and

WHEREAS, J.J DellaVecchio will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Susan; son, John, and his family; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Joseph John DellaVecchio, Jr., of Virginia Beach, an outstanding citizen, veteran, patriot, law-enforcement officer, and family man; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joseph John DellaVecchio, Jr., as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
