HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 131 Commending Robert Michael Chandler.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 19, 2016

 

WHEREAS, Robert Michael Chandler has selflessly educated thousands of local governmental officials for over 40 years, including planning commissioners, board of zoning appeals members, board of supervisor members, city mayors and council members, and building inspectors; and

WHEREAS, Michael Chandler developed and conducted educational programs, including the Virginia Certified Planning Commissioners’ Program, the Virginia Certified Boards of Zoning Appeals Program, the Virginia Institute for Planning Commissioners, the Virginia Mayors’ Institute, and the Virginia County Board Chairmen’s Institute, as a faculty member of 27 years with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and Virginia Cooperative Extension until his retirement in 2001 and subsequent appointment as professor emeritus; and

WHEREAS, Michael Chandler continues to provide education to governmental officials through various organizations, including the Virginia Association of County Organizations and Virginia Cooperative Extension, and as the director of education for Virginia Tech’s Land Use Education Program; and

WHEREAS, Michael Chandler’s work as an educator and planner has been recognized in the Commonwealth and nationally by the American Planning Association on numerous occasions; he received awards for the development of the Certified Planning Commissioners’ Program and his exemplary work on local comprehensive plans; and

WHEREAS, Michael Chandler served the Town of Blacksburg for over 18 years as a planning commissioner and town council member, including a two-year term as planning commission chair; and

WHEREAS, Michael Chandler served his profession as president to various state and national organizations, including the American Planning Association Virginia Chapter, Virginia Citizens Planning Association, Southeast Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration, and Virginia Community Development Society, and as a member of the American Planning Association National Board of Directors; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Robert Michael Chandler hereby be commended on the occasion of the 30th anniversary year of the first Certified Planning Commissioners’ Program; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Robert Michael Chandler as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect and admiration for his many years of educational service to local and state government officials in the Commonwealth.
