Commending Canon Virginia, Inc.

WHEREAS, in 2015, Canon Virginia, Inc., celebrated 30 years of being an outstanding corporate citizen, respected for its dynamic, forward-looking, and world-class manufacturing and service operations in Newport News and Gloucester County; and

WHEREAS, Canon Virginia was incorporated in 1985 and is a subsidiary of Canon Inc., a multi-national corporation headquartered in Japan that is a world leader in copying machines and other imaging and industrial equipment; and

WHEREAS, in 1986, Canon Virginia broke ground for a plain paper copier manufacturing facility in Newport News; today, the firm has expanded into other related fields and operates two facilities in Hampton Roads, totaling more than 1.9 million square feet of space; and

WHEREAS, Canon Virginia continually strives to remain globally competitive, operating under the corporate philosophy of “living and working together for the common good”; it has a state-of-the-art cartridge recycling facility in Gloucester, and the Newport News plant is a hub of innovation and high-tech manufacturing; and

WHEREAS, more than 1,800 people work for Canon Virginia in Newport News and at Canon Environmental Technologies Inc., in Gloucester; in the past three decades, the company has spent more than $900 million in capital investment in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Canon Virginia’s business operations include more than manufacturing; it has served as the North American and South American center for Canon Inc.’s, manufacturing, engineering, recycling, and technical support operations; and

WHEREAS, in recognizing the crucial need for skilled workers at its facilities, Canon Virginia helped create the Canon Leadership Scholars program at Christopher Newport University; each year since 2008, the company has provided $5,000 scholarships to 25 students; and

WHEREAS, additionally, Canon Virginia has been a major supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula, the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank, and local community colleges; the company also entered a partnership with Dominion Virginia Power to install 2,000 solar panels; and

WHEREAS, Canon Virginia’s presence has resulted in untold employment opportunities and economic growth in the Commonwealth, especially for the trucking industry and ports; many ancillary businesses also have emerged to support the company’s work; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Canon Virginia, Inc., hereby be commended on the occasion of its 30th anniversary of being one of the Commonwealth’s premier manufacturing and service businesses; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Toru Nishizawa, president and chief executive officer of Canon Virginia, Inc., as an expression of the Houses of Delegates’ respect and admiration for the company’s many contributions and commitment to excellence.
