Commending Dennis Riddick.

WHEREAS, Dennis Riddick was named the Chesapeake Man of the Year in 2015 by the Nu Delta Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity in honor of his many contributions to his family, fraternity, church, and the community; and

WHEREAS, Dennis Riddick was born in Chesapeake and was the 12th of 13 children; he graduated from Western Branch High School in 1979 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Union University in 1982 and a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina College of Criminal Justice in 1985; and

WHEREAS, while he was in college, Dennis Riddick became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; he joined the fraternity’s Nu Delta Lambda chapter in Chesapeake in 2005 and quickly became active in the fraternal and service organization; and

WHEREAS, in addition to serving as the chapter’s chaplain, Dennis Riddick is chair of the Health and Wellness Committee; in that capacity, he has implemented a successful health awareness program that includes workshops, physical training programs, seminars, forums, and wellness challenges, which has been well-received by the chapter’s members; and

WHEREAS, additionally, Dennis Riddick has made many valuable contributions to the fraternity’s national outreach efforts, including the campaigns A Voteless People Is A Hopeless People and Go to High School/Go to College, as well as Project Alpha; locally, he has been a holiday bell ringer for the Salvation Army; and

WHEREAS, in his professional life, Dennis Riddick is a senior licensing specialist for the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services, a position he has held for more than 20 years; he also is a certified substance abuse counselor; and

WHEREAS, as an active member of Grove Church in Portsmouth, Dennis Riddick leads the Congregational Care Ministry and co-chairs the Out of the Darkness Walk, which raises money to combat depression and prevent suicides; under his leadership, Grove Church registered more than 200 participants for the walk and raised more than $1,800; and

WHEREAS, Dennis Riddick is the proud father of a son and daughter; in his spare time, he enjoys jogging, listening to jazz music, and international travel; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Dennis Riddick hereby be commended for being named the Chesapeake Man of the Year in 2015 by the Nu Delta Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dennis Riddick as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect and admiration for his service to his family, fraternity, and church and his selfless work to make his community a better place.
