16104611DWHEREAS, Mary Anna Toms Broadbent of the City of Richmond has served her community with distinction as a teacher at Reveille Weekday School for 24 years; and
WHEREAS, Mary Broadbent is a lifelong resident of the Richmond area, who attended Mary Munford Elementary School and Collegiate School and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School; she attended Radford University, graduated from Westhampton College of the University of Richmond, and received a certificate in early childhood education from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College; and
WHEREAS, Mary Broadbent taught English and drama in the middle and upper schools of Collegiate School before turning her focus to early childhood education, particularly in science, at Reveille Weekday School; and
WHEREAS, Mary Broadbent has been an active participant and volunteer in the civic life of Richmond, through her past service as a parent volunteer at St. Christopher’s School and Collegiate School, including as co-chair of St. Christopher’s Fall Festival, and past service as a Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church; and
WHEREAS, as a long-term volunteer at the polls and an active member of a national political party at the city, state, and national levels, Mary Broadbent has enriched the political life of the community; and
WHEREAS, as a member of groups such as the Junior League of Richmond; the Woman’s Club of Richmond; the Tuckahoe Woman’s Club; the Commonwealth Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution; and the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, Mary Broadbent has contributed to the cultural life of the community; and
WHEREAS, through Mary Broadbent’s past service on the boards of groups such as the Collegiate Alumni Association, the Westhampton College Alumni Association, and the Junior Board of Historic Richmond Foundation and her ongoing service on the Board of Trustees of the James Monroe Memorial Foundation, she has provided able leadership as a volunteer; and
WHEREAS, Mary Broadbent’s dedication to early childhood education in science was recognized by her appointment to and past service on the Board of Trustees of the Science Museum of Virginia and her ongoing service as a citizen member of the museum’s Education Committee; and
WHEREAS, after 24 years of service, Mary Broadbent recently retired from teaching at Reveille Weekday School to spend more time with her family, particularly her seven grandchildren; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Mary Anna Toms Broadbent, a dedicated advocate for early childhood education in science, hereby be commended for her many years of community service on the occasion of her retirement; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mary Anna Toms Broadbent as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect and admiration and best wishes in the future.
