Celebrating the life of George Albert Williams.

WHEREAS, George Albert Williams, a devoted minister who was admired throughout Central Virginia for his spiritual leadership and who served the Commonwealth as Chief Deputy Clerk of the Virginia House of Delegates, died on June 7, 2015; and

WHEREAS, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, George Williams grew up in the Commonwealth, where he graduated from Harrisonburg High School; he earned a bachelor’s degree from Lynchburg College and a master’s degree from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education; and

WHEREAS, after being ordained into the ministry in 1946, George Williams served as minister to congregations in Louisa County, the City of Richmond, and the Towns of Ashland and Bowling Green; he was named minister emeritus of Slash Christian Church in Hanover County and served as associate executive secretary of the Virginia Council of Churches; and

WHEREAS, George Williams worked as a television producer, then joined the Virginia House of Delegates Clerk’s Office as journal clerk, where he served the Commonwealth for nearly 30 years before retiring as chief deputy clerk in 1996; and

WHEREAS, a respected leader in the field of state government, George Williams served as associate vice president and an executive committee member of the American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries, from which he earned a Distinguished Service Award in 1992; and

WHEREAS, George Williams also volunteered his time and talents as a member and past president of the American Camping Association and the Hanover Ruritan Club and a member of the 90&9 Breakfast Club; and

WHEREAS, George Williams will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Jeannette; daughters, Carole, Nancy, and Janet, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of George Albert Williams, a spiritual leader who served the Commonwealth as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates Clerk’s Office; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of George Albert Williams as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
