2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of McLean, a service organization whose activities have helped enrich the community—and the world—in many ways, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015; and
WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of McLean was chartered on November 10, 1965, and much of the work to bring the club into existence was done by Paul Nastoff, who is considered the father of the organization; and
WHEREAS, after conducting its first fundraiser—a raffle of a Ford automobile which brought in $600 for the Rotary Club of McLean—members chose to help establish a playground for disabled children at Lewinsville School; and
WHEREAS, that initial gift marked the beginning of the Rotary Club of McLean’s generosity to organizations at home and around the world; over the years, the club has donated to worthwhile groups and associations, provided medical assistance, and supported efforts to address some of the world’s most pressing issues; and
WHEREAS, the motto of Rotary International is “Service Above Self”; the members of the Rotary Club of McLean meet weekly for fellowship and to learn more about issues in their community, the Commonwealth, and around the world; and
WHEREAS, local organizations that have received support from the Rotary Club of McLean include the Falls Church-McLean Children’s Center, the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, SHARE, Inc., Capital Caring hospice, Langley Residential Support Services, and the Safe Community Coalition; and
WHEREAS, members of the Rotary Club of McLean also have helped improve the lives of those around them; they volunteer at schools and food banks and are bell-ringers for the Salvation Army’s Christmas kettle fund-raising program; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Rotary Club of McLean on the occasion of its 50th anniversary of providing “Service Above Self,” and for its valuable work assisting people and organizations in need; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lynn Heinrichs, president of the Rotary Club of McLean, as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for its many years of service to the community, the Commonwealth, and the world.
