16103258DWHEREAS, Anthony Young, a passionate advocate for disability rights who strove to ensure that all residents of the Commonwealth with disabilities could live full, independent lives, died on December 7, 2015; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Fairfax County, Anthony “Tony” Young worked for United Cerebral Palsy, Inc., and disability rights and rehabilitation organizations in Washington, D.C., then served as senior public policy strategist for SourceAmerica; and
WHEREAS, Tony Young chaired the committee that founded ENDependence Center of Northern Virginia (ECNV), a community-based resource and advocacy center that promotes independent living for people with disabilities, and served as the center’s first executive director; and
WHEREAS, during ECNV’s first year of operation, Tony Young worked with the Fairfax County Human Rights Commission to adopt a landmark human rights ordinance, protecting individuals with disabilities from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations; in recognition of his exceptional achievements, he was named as ECNV Board Member Emeritus; and
WHEREAS, Tony Young also served as second vice president of Handicaps Unlimited of Virginia, a statewide coalition of people with disabilities with whom he worked to achieve passage of the Virginians with Disabilities Act and the creation of the Department for the Rights of Virginians with Disabilities; and
WHEREAS, Tony Young will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife, Kathleen; son, Cameron; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Anthony Young, a hardworking advocate for disability rights; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Anthony Young as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
