Commending Spotsylvania High School.

WHEREAS, in the 2015 - 2016 academic year, Spotsylvania High School celebrates 75 years of preparing Spotsylvania County students for higher education, careers, and responsible citizenship; and

WHEREAS, established in 1940, Spotsylvania High School was the first consolidated public high school for many of the small, rural communities in southern Spotsylvania County; the original school building on Courthouse Road was converted into a junior high school in 1967 and now houses the C. Melvin Snow Memorial Branch Library; and

WHEREAS, at its second location, Spotsylvania High School welcomed African American students from John J. Wright High School in 1968 after the integration of public schools in the area; Spotsylvania High School’s third and current building, also on Courthouse Road, opened in 1994; and

WHEREAS, in 2015, Spotsylvania High School served more than 1,100 students with a diverse curriculum and numerous athletics programs and extracurricular activities, including an outstanding United States Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program; and

WHEREAS, Spotsylvania High School will begin offering an International Baccalaureate program in 2016 - 2017; the school currently works with the Commonwealth Governor’s School to provide a rigorous academic program for gifted students; and

WHEREAS, Spotsylvania High School has achieved academic excellence throughout its history thanks to the hard work of its faculty, administration, and staff; the dedication of generations of students; and the support of parents, families, and other members of the school community; and

WHEREAS, Spotsylvania High School will commemorate its 75th anniversary with events and celebrations throughout the year, including a homecoming tailgate, the release of a commemorative book, a prom theme similar to that of the school’s first graduating class, and a special graduation ceremony for the Class of 2016; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Spotsylvania High School on the occasion of its 75th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Rusty Davis, principal of Spotsylvania High School, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the school’s legacy of service to the youth of Spotsylvania County.
