HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 528
Commending Everybody Code Now!

WHEREAS, Everybody Code Now!, a student-run nonprofit organization in Northern Virginia, provides young people with opportunities for computer science education through camps, workshops, and direct mentorship; and

WHEREAS, founded by a high school student, Everybody Code Now! works to empower the next generation of leaders in computing to achieve high levels of technical expertise and better support their communities through entrepreneurship and innovation; and

WHEREAS, Everybody Code Now! has developed several programs to serve students, including SparkIT, a seminar for middle school and high school students with an emphasis on female students; SparkIT participants learn basic HTML and CSS coding to help create a website for a local nonprofit organization and receive a small scholarship to continue pursuing computer science education; and

WHEREAS, Everybody Code Now! also offers the national programs CS Chicas and CSS Chicas; CS Chicas allows high school computer science students to mentor middle school girls, imparting their love of coding and serving as positive role models; and

WHEREAS, the CSS Chicas program is focused on teaching high school girls common web development languages, along with classes on web design and opportunities to learn from guest speakers; the program gives girls the tools and techniques to become more empowered as individuals and make a difference in their communities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Everybody Code Now! for its work to inspire students and foster an interest in computer science; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Everybody Code Now! as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the organization’s contributions to making the Commonwealth a leader in computer science education.
