Commending Stephen L. Sellers.

WHEREAS, Stephen L. Sellers, who has served with great distinction as Chief of Police for Albemarle County for five years, will retire on June 1, 2016, after 34 years of outstanding law-enforcement service to the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Stephen “Steve” L. Sellers became Chief of Police for Albemarle County in 2011; he previously had worked for the Fairfax County Police Department for 28 years and had risen to the rank of deputy chief of police before assuming the helm of the Albemarle County Police Department; and

WHEREAS, as Police Chief of Albemarle County, Steve Sellers is most proud of the changes he has helped implement in the police force; the department now operates under a Police Service Area community policing model, known as geo-policing, which stresses a community-first and citizen-first approach; and

WHEREAS, Steve Sellers has overseen the ongoing implementation of a new records management system for the Albemarle County Police Department, activation of a computer-aided dispatch system, construction of a new firearms training facility, and revision of the department’s policy manual; and

WHEREAS, with a focus on the importance of regional cooperation, Steve Sellers has worked to ensure that the Albemarle County, City of Charlottesville, and the University of Virginia Police Departments utilize consistent training methods so that the three departments work together effectively; and

WHEREAS, Steve Sellers also has made many positive changes to the Albemarle County Police Department and the community; in addition to the innovative law-enforcement initiatives and organizational changes in the department, he has forged meaningful community partnerships and worked to improve the police department and its relationship with the community; and

WHEREAS, an inspiring and dedicated leader locally and statewide, Steve Sellers has made many valued contributions to law enforcement in the Commonwealth, including serving as a member of the executive board of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police; and

WHEREAS, after the events of September 11, 2001, Steve Sellers helped create the National Capital Regional Intelligence Center, now called the Regional Intelligence Center, which is a national model for the sharing, collection, and investigation of criminal intelligence; and in 2003, Steve Sellers led the Washington Area Prosecution Taskforce; and

WHEREAS, Steve Sellers earned a bachelor’s degree from National Louis University and a master’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; he graduated from the FBI National Academy and is a member of the Virginia Highway Safety Committee; and

WHEREAS, in retirement, Steve Sellers and his wife plan to remain in Albemarle County; he wants to be active in the community, spend more time with his children and grandchildren, pursue consulting opportunities, and enjoy his many interests, including woodworking, fishing, amateur radio, and volunteering; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Stephen L. Sellers, Chief of Police for Albemarle County, on the occasion of his retirement in June 2016; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Stephen L. Sellers as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his tireless and dedicated service to the people of Albemarle County, Fairfax County, and the Commonwealth.
